The UK Expat Community in Spain is thought to be between .3m and .4m but less than 30% speak Spanish…
Just because you tried to learn doesn’t mean you can’t
Many adults say, “I tried to learn Spanish once, but it didn’t work”. But that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed.
Adults just learn differently, not worse
Children pick up languages through immersion, songs, and endless repetition. Adults, on the other hand, learn best when patterns are explained and linked to what they already know. Once you use the right approach — structured lessons plus real practice — progress often comes faster than expected.
Previous struggles is useful experience
Even if you feel like you “failed” before, chances are you already absorbed more than you realise. Words, sounds, or even just the rhythm of Spanish will come back to you, giving you a head start this time.
You don’t need talent to learn Spanish — just the right approach
A lot of people believe language learning is a “gift” — something only talented people can do easily. The reality? Success with Spanish has little to do with natural talent and everything to do with approach.
Talent is a myth
No one is born knowing Spanish verbs or vocabulary. What feels like “talent” is usually just effective practice and consistent exposure. Anyone can build those habits.
Method matters
Random apps or memorising long lists of words won’t take you far. What works is a structured method that combines grammar explanations, real conversations, and active practice. A good method gives you a roadmap so you always know what to do next.
So how do you find the best, fun way to learn Spanish and avoid the false claims and false starts?
At Vamos, we only teach Spanish and we maintain the same high standards, qualified teachers and 20-hour courses since we opened in 2011.

We have an experienced team of teachers, many of whom have been teaching at the school for several years.
Our teaching method is engaging and dynamic; all our teachers are experienced native speakers, qualified in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
We follow a structured framework that combines academic rigour with fun and enjoyment.

“Often when I had to go to the local town hall and do something in Spanish, I’d rehearse what to say but still lack confidence. I’d finally get the Spanish out only to find that they’d answer in English, which was pretty disheartening. With time at Vamos my confidence and ability has and continues to grow. Recently I went to the local tax office to sort out some paperwork. I asked what I needed, understood the answers, and finished it in one visit. No switching to English, no panic. I walked out feeling like I actually live here, not just a tourist, a part of the island. The classes gave me the phrases, the confidence, and the practice to handle it.”

“Before, anything official in Spanish felt like guesswork. I’d plan a script, stumble, and end up nodding along. Over time with Vamos I learned how to ask the right questions and follow what people say. I went to the Movistar store, asked about the monthly price, the length of the contract, and how cancellation works, and I understood the replies. I chose what suited me and left knowing exactly what I’d signed up for. That came from steady practice.”

“We used to go back to the same tapas bars because I knew they could follow my English. With Vamos, little by little, I started walking into any tapas bar in my neighbourhood. I order like a regular and chat with people in the bar. I’m making friends and seeing a side of Spain I couldn’t reach before. The classes took away the hesitation and gave me the tools to start and keep a conversation going.”

“Restaurants were a stress for me because of diet restrictions. I’d point at the menu and hope for the best. Now I can explain what I can’t eat, ask for changes, and understand the answers. Something else changed too. People stop me in the street for directions and I can help without the warning about my terrible Spanish. The weekly breakout rooms at Vamos did that. Real conversations, real topics, every week. It pushed me from memorising phrases to actually speaking, and that’s been a game changer.”
Learning online at Vamos is just like being at our school.
Our students have as much fun learning as we have teaching.
