El laberinto del fauno – 14 de julio 7.30pm

¡Hola Todos!

I hope you have been enjoying the British summer – and what a better way than to watch a Spanish movie, have a pizza and a drink together with other students.

Friday 14 July is our fourth, amazing movie ”El laberinto del fauno”  and once again we expect a full house.

This is a Mexican- Spanish production directed by Guillermo del Toro. You will probably know the director because he was behind the production of Hobbit Trilogy, Blade II, Hellboy and Biutiful.

Guillermo del Toro is part of the same generation as other 2 amazing Mexican directors, Alfonso Cuarón (who directed “Y tu mamá también” and Gravity) and Alejandro González Iñarritu (Amores Perro, Babel, Biutiful, Birdman and The Revenant) and all three have worked many times together and “EL laberinto del fauno” was one.

The movie is a bit different from the other three we showed because this is a fantasy movie, but it has some historical reference. The story takes place in Spain in May–June 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil war and during the early of Franco dictator era. It has a main character, Ofelia, who interacts with an overgrown abandoned labyrinth and a mysterious faun creature.

Please see the trailer below:

The movie was an international success and received plenty of good critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 95% based on 225 reviews and describes it as “Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups”. The movie also won 7 Goya awards, a BAFTA for best movie in foreign language. But what gave it more international reputation  was the 6 nominations for Academy Awards including best original screenplay, best score and foreign language movie, which finally won 3 (best art direction, best Cinematography, and makeup).

Did you know that the idea for Pan’s Labyrinth came from Guillermo del Toro‘s notebooks, which he had kept for twenty years? And at one point during the movie production he forgot all those notes in a taxi in London?

Luckily the taxi driver found him and returned them all two days later.

I suppose I have convinced you to join the film!
