Level 1 (CEF A1.1)
I understand instructions, questions and short phrases with the help of repetition, mime or pictures. I use single words or short phrases. I need repetition for correct pronunciation. I understand clearly written single words. I can copy single words correctly. I can label pictures and choose the right word to fill in gaps.
Level 2 (CEF A1.2)
I understand a range of phrases, sentences & instructions with some repetition and respond using words or actions. I use short set phrases or sentences. I say things clearly but still need support. I can understand short phrases that I have seen before. I can read aloud familiar words & phrases. I can look up words. I can copy short phrases correctly. I can spell words from memory.
Level 3 (CEF A1.3)
I understand with repetition a series of phrases at near normal speed and note main points and details. I can take part in a short conversation of 2-3 exchanges with prompts. I can understand short printed texts containing familiar language and note main points. I can write 2-3 sentences with support. I can express likes/dislikes. I can write short phrases from memory.
Level 4 (CEF A2.1)
I understand longer passages from one topic with some repetition needed. I can take part in a conversation of 3-4 exchanges with prompts and use grammar to adapt. I can understand short printed and handwritten texts and note main points & details. I can write a paragraph containing 3-4 sentences. I can use grammar to change words/phrases. I can use a dictionary to check words/phrases.
Level 5 (CEF A2.2)
I understand language from several topics. I can understand when present and past or future events are described. I can take part in a conversation using present and past or future tense. I can give and ask for information & opinions. I can understand on my own a variety of texts with present and past or future events in them. I can write a short text. I can refer to past or future events as well as things I do every day.
Level 6 (CEF A2.3)
I understand language in new situations. I understand when present and past and future events are described. I can use the present and past and future tense. I can use grammar to build my own phrases in new contexts. I can use the present and past and future tenses. I can use grammar to build my own phrases in new contexts. I can write a short text. I can refer to the present, past and future. I can make up new sentences with my knowledge of grammar.
Levels 7 – 9 (CEF B1)
I can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. I can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. I can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. I can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
Levels 10 – 12 (CEF B2)
I can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. I can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. I can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
